Small amounts of Botox® are injected, using a cosmetic needle, into the muscles that have caused the skin to crease and furrow. As Botox® is injected directly into the wrinkles, the facial muscles are temporarily relaxed and the formation of wrinkles is prevented, whilst existing lines are softened.
Because a very fine needle is used, most patients find that there is only mild and temporary discomfort. The entire procedure usually takes no longer than 10 minutes. Cold compresses or topical anaesthetic cream can be used to numb the area injected.
You will be able to go straight home after the procedure. Normal activity can be resumed, but facial massages or any activity that places stress on the treated areas should be restricted for 24 hours. See below for post-treatment instructions.
How long does it last and what are the side effects?
Most of the research states that the treatment effects will be visible for 3 months, but in some cases can last much longer (e.g. 4-6 months). After prolonged use, the effects will gradually start to last longer, up to 8 months in some cases.
Due to Botox® not being permanent, possible side effects are temporary, rare and localised to the area injected. The most common side effect is bruising.
